   D.U.I. Checkpoints and Roving Patrols

(D.U.I. – Driving under the influence)

The Lehigh Valley Regional D.U.I. Task Force sponsors sobriety checkpoints throughout the Lehigh Valley. Lehigh Township Police Department coordinates all D.U.I. checkpoints and roving D.U.I. patrols. Colonial Regional Police Department works closely with both entities to combat the problem of driving under the influence.

D.U.I. roving patrols consist of one (1) officer patrolling their departmental jurisdiction with the sole intent of detecting impaired motorists. The Lehigh Valley Regional D.U.I. Task Force reimburses Colonial Regional Police Department the officer’s salary while conducting a roving D.U.I. patrol.

During 2007 four (4) roving patrols were performed by Colonial Regional Police Department. Those roving patrols produced:

                  o Two (2) arrests for D.U.I.

                  o Ten (10) written warnings

                  o 17 traffic citations

During 2007 there were nine (9) CRPD officers assigned to DUI checkpoints in other municipalities assisting them under the mutual aid agreement.

D.U.I. checkpoints are stationary road blocks where vehicles are channeled through blockades enabling law enforcement officers to have contact with the occupants of passing vehicles. The checkpoint locations are approved by the Pennsylvania Board of Health under criteria consisting of proven problem areas by the local police department and a roadway where the checkpoint can be safely conducted. Checkpoints are performed 10:00p.m. - 3:00a.m; which statistics prove is the most likely time to encounter intoxicated drivers. Approximately 15 officers are used during these D.U.I. checkpoints. Approximately ten (10) Colonial Regional Officers are used, with additional officers from neighboring jurisdictions assisting. The local Fire Departments and Ambulance Services also attend these checkpoints, providing assistance, equipment and rendering medical aid if necessary.

During the 2007 year, Colonial Regional Police Department conducted one (1) D.U.I. checkpoint in Hanover Township. While the checkpoint was in operation; these offenses were produced:

Nine (9) drivers had blood drawn

Seven (7) were arrested for having a blood alcohol content above the legal limit.

Two (2) were arrested for driving while under the influence of a controlled substance.

Four (4) citations for various traffic offenses were issued
