Taser X26

C.R.P.D.'s Latest

                  Less-Lethal Weapon

In 2007 Colonial Regional Police Department received a grant to purchase eight (8) X26 Tasers. Tasers are also called Electronic Control Devices or ECDs which propels wires or direct contact to conduct energy to affect the sensory and motor functions of the nervous system.

The human nervous system communicates with simple electrical impulses. Taser technology uses similar electrical impulses to cause stimulation of the nerves that control movement. The original stun systems generated "electrical noise" which cause pain or discomfort, but did not incapacitate the offender. The latest generation of Taser technology stimulates the peripheral nervous system by causing stimulation of motor nerves contracting the muscles. All previous less-lethal weapons have worked on pain compliance that can be overcome by drugs, alcohol, emotionally disturbed persons or by focused, combative individuals. The model that C.R.P.D. carries affects both the sensory AND motor nervous systems which incapacitate offenders immediately.

In 2007 Patrol Officers and Detectives were trained in the use of the Taser. As a part of this training, all officers were subjected to a Taser deployment. The purpose of having officers experience the delivery of a Taser shock is to educate the officer on the effects and the recovery speed of the offender.

Colonial Regional Police Department deployed a Taser during two (2) incidents in 2007. The first incident resulted in a positive outcome as an alleged carjacker, who was attempting to flee, was apprehended without injury to officers or himself after the use of the Taser on the subject. On the second occasion the Taser was deployed but the Taser probes did not make contact with the subject, thus no shock was delivered.
