                          Seatbelt Compliance Program

The Colonial Regional Police Department has been participating in this National Highway Traffic Safety Administration funded federal grant; partnered with Buckle-Up Pennsylvania since 2001. The grant provides financial for the salaries of the officers participating in this program.

The campaign consists of intensive, widespread enforcement for a short duration. Enforcement is conducted at specified times of the year which are highly publicized through the media. The objective is to raise seatbelt usage statewide; the goal is 90% use by 2007. Currently the state of Pennsylvania is an unprecedented 89%. To reach the goal, two (2) million Pennsylvania drivers must buckle-up.

The focus is now on nighttime enforcement. As daytime seat belt use climbs, nighttime crashes continue to needlessly claim lives. A new PA Survey has indicated that nighttime seat belt use is 74%, but more important, 76% of nighttime fatalities were unbelted. To lessen the divide between daytime and nighttime belt use, enforcement activities will include Waves held between the hours of 6pm and 6am.

In 2007, Colonial Regional Police Department participated in two (2) scheduled enforcement "Waves".
